Minnesota Korean American Women’s Association of Minnesota was formed by a group of Korean women who were married to American men in 1981 under the name of the “Korean American Wives Association.”

 미네소타 한미 여성회는 미국인과 결혼을 한 한국 여성들에 의해 1981년에 “한미 부인회” 명칭으로 조직 되었습니다.    

 Nancy Brummond was the first president in 1981 to serve our organization and Taehee Kim, in 1982, and so on… Kuncha Johnson is serving as an incumbent president as of 2012.

 낸시 브루만드 씨께서 1981년 첫 회장으로 시작 김 태희씨께서 1982년 등등으로 이어져 군자 쟌슨씨께서 2012년 현 회장으로 봉사를 하고 계십니다. 

 At that time, our focus was promoting social gatherings among Korean women to console their homesickness.

 그당시에, 저희들의 촛점은 한국 여성들의 친목을 도모하여 우리 여성들이 겪는 고향에 대한 향수를 달래는데 그 뜻을 두었습니다. 

 According to Kapsun Adams, (she served as a president in 1994), she stated that years ago, there weren’t many Koreans in Minneapolis and St. Paul area and we were yearning for friends and family back in home.  Above of all what we missed most was the Korean food that we used to eat.  Because of that, when they run into Korean people, they were bonded instantaneously and easily built a friendship.  So they gathered often at someone’s home whenever they had the opportunity.  Every time, whoever attended this gatherings, automatically brought over a dish of Korean food shared with others and shared one’s life stories to console their heartaches as well as their happiness too.  This was a great therapeutic session for our women and had a very positive impact on our women’s emotional health.  As time went on, people who came to the meeting, they envisioned expanding this to our society; to those women who had not known of this group.   Soon, they recruited more women and shared this benefit through the gatherings and this led to become a more meaningful and structured organization.   This became today’s Korean American Women’s Association and the monthly gatherings became our tradition.

 갑순 아담스 씨에 의하면, (1994년 회장역임) 예전에는 미니애폴리스시와 세인트 폴 시에 한국 사람들이 별로 없어서 한국에 있는 가족들과 친구들을 많이 그리워 했으며 그중에서도 그 분들이 먹던 한국음식들을 제일 그리워 했다고 합니다.  그럼으로 그 분들이 한국 사람을 우연히 만나게 되면, 그 순간에 정이 금방 들어 쉽게 친하게 지내게 되었고, 될수 있으면 어느 누구네  집에서 만나 정을 나누는 기회를 자주 가졌다고 합니다.  그럴때마다, 자동적으로, 오시는 분들이 한국 음식 한가지씩을 해 가지고 와서 같이 나누어 먹었고, 각자의 궂은일, 좋은일 생활담을 허심탄회하게 털어놓으며 서로의 마음을 달랬다고 합니다. 이것은 우리 여성들에게 정신적 건강을 도와주는데 아주 좋은 영향을 끼치는 치유의 비법이었습니다.  시간이 지남에 따라 모이시는 분들이 이 모임을 좀더 뜻있는 모임으로 만들자는데 포부를 가지게 되었다고 합니다.  그래서, 저희들을 잘 모르는 분들에게도 확대 이 것을 권장 더 많은 분들이 이 좋은 혜택을 받을수 있도록 기여 하자는 데에서 단체를 조직 이끌어 왔는데, 이것이 바로 오늘날의 한미 여성회가 되었고 달달이 모이는 모임은 월례회 모임의 전통이 되었다고 합니다.

In 2002, we have changed our organization’s name to the Korean American Women’s Association of Minnesota to broaden the membership’s eligibility to our Korean Women.  Without changing the name, the biggest concern was restricting our member’s involvement in our organization because some members are no longer married to Americans due to becoming divorced, widowed, or had never been married.  With this change, our membership eligibility expanded to any Korean woman who shares Korean blood and is interested in our organization. 

 2002년도에 들어 회원 자격의 범위를 넓히기 위해 저희 단체의 명칭을 미네소타 한미 여성회로 바꾸었습니다.  명칭을 바꾸지 않고서는, 회원 자격여부의 문제로 여성들의 활동을 제한하게 되었었습니다.  그 이유는, 어떤분들은 이혼한 관계로 미국분과 결혼을 하신 상태가 아니고, 어떤분들은 부군께서 돌아가셔서 미망인으로 남고, 어떤분들은 전혀 결혼을 하지 않은 상태이니, 이 명칭을 바꿈으로서 저희 회원자격은, 어느 한국 여성이든지 한국인의 피를 가지고 있고 또 저희 단체에 관심이 있는 분이면 다 포함을 할수 있도록 광범위하게 넓혔습니다.

 In 2005, Director of our organization, Jinhee Darmer (served as a president in 2003) became involved with KAWA USA and she has been attending the national and international conventions as a Representative of Minnesota.  In addition, she has been serving as a board member for the Korean Association of Minnesota since 2003.  Jinhee Darmer is now serving as the KAWA USA President in 2011-2012.  Gina Bardon (served as a president in 2008-2009) was appointed as a KAWA USA Vice President for Midwest Region, the term 2009-2010, and Mehee Coolidge has been appointed to serve as a KAWA USA, Vice President for Midwest Region, Grace Vigilante has been appointed as a Secretary of General, and Kapsun Adams has been appointed as a Treasurer for the KAWA USA, the term 2011-2012.

 2005 년도에는, 우리 이사장님이신 진희 달머 씨께서 (회장 역임, 2003) 한미 여성회 총 연합회 일에 관여를 하기 시작 했으며, 전 미주 총 연합회와 국제 총 연합회 행사에 미네소타 주 대표로 참석하기 시작했습니다.  그리고 또 미네소타 한인회 이사로서 2003년도 부터 수고를 해주시고 계시며, 이제는 전 미주 여성회 총 연합회 회장으로서 2011-2012년 임기를 맡아 수고를 하시고 계십니다.  지나 바돈씨 께서는 (회장 역임, 2008-2009) 전 미주 총 연합회 미드웨스트 지역 부회장으로 임명을 받아 2009-2010년 임기기간을 수고를 해 주셨고, 또한, 미희 쿨리지 께서도 전 미주 총 연합회, 미드웨스트 지역 부회장으로 임명을 받아 2011-2012년 임기기간 동안에 수고를 하시고, 그레이스 비질란테씨는 전 미주 총 연합회 총무로 임명을 받았으며, 갑순 아담스씨는 전 미주 총 연합회 재무로 임명을 받아 2011-2012년 임기를 수고해 주시고 계십니다.         

Members of Early Immigration Experiences

회원님들의 초기 이민 경험들

 As you know, there are many life experiences that we hear from our members about their lives in those days when they first immigrated to Minnesota and allow us to re-think about how wonderful a time that we are now living in.

 여러분들께서도 잘 아시겠지만, 많은 우리 회원님들의 그 옛날, 그 분들께서 처음 미네소타 주에 이민을 와서 겪었던 그 분들의 생활담을 듣다 보면, 저희들은 너무 좋은 세상에 살고 있다는 것을 다시 일깨워 줍니다.      

Our women had faced many adversaries that one could not imagine and they overcame it with all of the odds against them.  Most of our members had come to the USA through an international marriage and were thinking everything would be okay “because we are in love.”  Soon, we learned that the love is not everything in the society that we are living in.  The language barrier and culture differences were the most challenging to our women.

Even though we thought that we spoke English well, the sentence structures and the pronunciations were totally different than what we were used to.  Because we inherited our unique short and hot tempered Korean personality, we very often lost our patience and spoke what we thought was right.  That was Kong-grish.  Which it means, some Korean words and some English words mixed together in any way we like to use for our convenience.           

Though, we managed to find jobs and with that hard earned money, supported families in Korea and sponsored the family immigrations to US.  These women’s unconditional love and devoted efforts to provide a better life for their family members was truly an unselfish act of self- sacrifice.

우리 여성들께서 대적해야 했던 많은 역경들이며, 이 분들이 처한 어러움을 하나 하나 극복해 가야 했던 이분들의 정신은 높이 존경해야 할일입니다.  우리 회원님들 대부분은 국제 결혼으로 인해 이 미국으로 오게 되었고 우리가 사랑을 하기에 모든것이 괜찮으리라 생각을 했을 뿐입니다.  얼마 되지않아, 이 세상을 살아가는데 있어서 사랑이 전부가 아니라는 것을 깨닭게 되었고, 가장 도전적인 일은 언어 장벽과 문화차이 였습니다. 그래도 우리 딴에는 영어를 괜찮게 한다고 생각 했었는데, 막상 대하고 보니, 언어 구조와 억양이 저희들이 생각 했던것과는 전혀 다른 것이었습니다.  거기다가 우리 한국 사람들의 특징인 급하고도 정렬적인 성질을 물려받은 우리들은 흔히 침착성을 잃어 버리고는 우리 마음에 내키는데로 맞다고 생각되는데로 말을 막 했습니다.  그러니, 그것이 바로 콩글리시가 되었지요.  그 뜻은 영어 단어 몇자와 한국단어 몇자들을 우리들이 아무렇게나 맞추고 싶은데로 섞어서 편리하게 쓰는것을 말합니다.    

그래도, 우리 여성들은 어떻게 해서 직장들을 잡았고 힘들게 벌은 돈으로 한국에 있는 가족들을 도왔으며 가족들의 미국 이민도 후원 했습니다.  이런 여성들의 가족에 대한 헌신적인 사랑 그리고 가족들의 좀 더 낳은 생활을 돕기 위해 온갖 노력을 쏟은 이 분들이야말로 참으로 자기 자신을 생각하지 않고 나 자신을 희생하는 행동이라 하겠습니다.    

 Back in 1957, our member Kim Hanson in Anoka was one of the early Korean settlers to Minnesota.  According to her, when she came to Minnesota, there were a no Korean grocery stores and a no Korean restaurants like there is now.  So she told her mother in Korea that she had has been craving Korean food.  Her mother carefully packaged soybean paste (doin-jang) and hot pepper paste (go-choo-jang) in cans and wrapped around several times with tape so the contents would not leak or overflow.  Then she wanted to save shipping costs so she shipped these packages via ship instead of the air mail.  It took months on the sea and finally it came.  That was the most precious food that she ever got and she used little amounts of the sauce when she made a Korean soy bean soup (doin-jang-guk).  That taste was no comparison to others, it was just like eating precious honey. In 2002, she donated $1,000 to Korean American Women’s Association as well as the Korean Association of Minnesota and Korean Seniors Association of Minnesota.  In 2010, she donated $5,000 to Jong-Ro Gu-Chung in Korea to help preserve Jongmyo Shrine.  This is the place where Koreans can find Korean spirits.  The place is dedicated to the memorial service for the deceased Kings and Queens of Choson Dynasty.   

 아노카 시에 사시는 우리 회원님, 킴 핸슨씨는 1957년에 이 미네소타주에 오셔서 일찍 정착한 분들중의 한분입니다.  이 분에 의하면, 이 분이 미네소타에 왔을때에 한국 식품 가게도 하나 없었고 지금같은 한국 식당도 하나 없었다고 합니다.  그래서 한국에 계시는 친정 어머님께 한국음식이 먹고 싶다고 했더니, 어머님께서 된장, 고추장을 깡통에다 조심스럽게 이것을 담아서 또 이것이 흐르거나 새지 않게 테으프로 여러겹을 둘러서, 부치는 값을 절약하기 위해, 비행기로 부치는 것 보다는 배로 부쳐서 이것이 바다에서 몇달을 보낸후 드디어 도착했는데, 이것이 이분에게는 얼마나 귀한 음식이었는지 모른다고 합니다.  이것으로 된장국을 끓여 먹고는 싶은데, 이것이 어찌나 귀했던지 많이는 넣지 못하고 조금씩만 넣어 끓여 먹었는데도 그맛이 아주귀한 꿀맛과 같이 그 무엇과도 비교 할수 없었을 정도라고 했습니다. 

이 분은 2002년도에 한미 여성회는 물론이고 미네소타 한인회, 그리고 미네소타 노인회에도 각 $1,000 불씩을 기증 했으며, 2010년에는 한국에 있는 종묘 사직단을 위해 종로 구청에 $5,000불을 기증 해 주셔서 종묘 사직을 보존하는데 도움이 되게 했습니다.  이곳은 조선시대의 왕과 왕비들의 위폐를 모시는 유교 사상의 사당으로서 한국인의 얼을 찾을수 있는 곳입니다.            

In the early 1980s, our president Kuncha Johnson and our board member, Helen Reider had envisioned to have an outdoor Skate Board Park in the City of Bloomington.  These two women’s courageous proposal with their blueprint to City of Bloomington to build the very first outdoor Skate Board Park in the State of Minnesota was headlined in Star Tribune.  This was new to the community and the city council as a whole didn’t had much knowledge of this.  Later, they had to withdraw due to unforeseen liability issues, insurance premiums and the cost of construction; it wasn’t worth taking the risks to open the park after all of the agony they put through with the city.  However, these women’s outlook was highly evaluated in the community.  Twenty years later, a few other cities have opened skate board parks of their own, which our children enjoy. 

 1980년대에 우리 회장님, 군자 쟌슨씨와 이사님이신 헬렌 라이더씨께서는 야외 스케이트 보드 파크를 불르밍튼 시에 열 포부를 가지셨었습니다.  이 분들께서 블루 청사진을 들고 블루밍턴 시에 미네소타 주 제일 첫번째 야외 스케이트 보드 파크 건축 제안을 해 이 분들의 용감성은 스타추리비운 신문에까지 크게 실리기도 했습니다.  이 때만 해도, 이 지역에는 아주 새로운 것이라 시 의원들도 이것에 대한 지식이 별로 없었을 때였습니다.  건설비용, 보험료, 예상치 못할 책임문제 등만 생각해도 힘이 드는데, 거기다 또 시측과 건축 제안을 놓고 여러차례 건축 협상을 하다가 지쳐서, 이런 모험으로 파크를 열것이 아니라는 것을 깨닫고 결국은 포기를 하게 되었습니다.  그렇지만, 이분들의 장래를 꿰뚫어 보는 시야는 높이 평가 되었습니다.  20년 이후, 다른 인근에 있는 몇 도시들이, 이 야외 스케이트 보드 파크를 시 자체에서 열어 우리 어린이들이 즐기고 있습니다                      

Our members have been involved in and support a lot of community work vigorously within the Korean community, not only helping individuals who are in need,  we also help Korean Community Organizations such as the Korean Association’s events including the Festival of Nations; various service projects for Korean Service Center, Network of Professional Adopted Koreans (NoPak) event, Passport to Korea, Korean Traditional Fashion show at Mall of America; Minnesota Korean American Athletics Association; AdopSource; etc…

 저희 회원들은 한인사회안에서 필요한 많은 일들에 적극적으로 참여하고 또 보조를 해오고 있는데, 개인적으로 저희들의 도움을 필요한 분 뿐만 아니라 또한 한인 단체들도 많이 도와오고 있는 중입니다.  그 단체들은, 미네소타 한인회의 행사인 국제 민속 제전; 한인 복지 센터 에서 주선하는 여러행사들; (한국 입양인 전문인들의 연결망) 네트워크 어브 프로페셔널 아답테드 코리안스 (노팩) 에서 주관, 미국 미네소타주에 있는 메가 멀에서 개최한 (여권을 한국으로) 패스포트 투 코리아 의 행사중 하나인, 한국 전통 의상쇼를 도왔고; 한인 체육회; 아답소스; 등등을 돕고 있는 중입니다. 

Teaching Korean Greetings, Lions Club Convention

We also have been involved in other community services such as Minnehaha Academy, Korean Culture Camp Luncheon Service project, and with Hopkins Lions Club in Minnesota, promoted Korean culture at Minnesota Lions Club Convention in Edina.   To celebrate 95^th International Lions Club Annual Convention 2012, June 23-26, in Busan, Korea and encourage Minnesota Delegates to attend the event, our members and adopted Koreans were wore Korean Traditional dress (han-bok) and served Rice, Kimchi, Boolgogie.  In addition, we distributed a welcome card that has a picture of Diamond Bridge in Busan and Korean Greetings. 

 저희들은 또, 한인 사회 이외인 다른 사회 활동에도 참여를 하고 있는데, 미네하하 아카데미의 한국 풍습 캠프, 한국 점심 제공 행사, 그리고 또, 미네소타주, 합킨스 라이온스 클럽과 함께, 이다이나 시에서 있었던 미네소타 라이온스 클럽 총회 에서 한국 부산에 대한 홍보활동을 했습니다.  2012년 6월 23일 부터 26일까지 한국, 부산에서 있을 95주년 국제 라이온스 클럽 정기 총회를 축하하며, 미네소타 대표들의 참석을  권장하기 위해 여성회 회원들과 한국 입양인들이 한복을 입고 한국 고유의 음식, 밥 과 불고기, 김치를 선보였고 또 부산 광안대교 (다이아몬드 다리) 와 한국 인사말이 쓰여진 환영 카드도 배부했습니다.

Sukhui Johnson

The Korean American Women’s Association members are very active with keeping up with the Korean traditions and serving the community in their own unique way.  Our member, Sukhui Johnson performs Gayakum Byungchang in our community event regularly, and Yeong Ae Oien (served as a president in 2000) and Sukhui Johnson have been involved with the Triniti Singers and performs in many different local communities including senior assisted living homes.

 저희 한미 여성회 회원님들은 한국전통을 유지하기위해 아주 활동적이며 각기 특이한 방법으로 지역사회에 헌신을 하고 있습니다.  우리 회원님, 숙희 쟌슨씨는 우리 사회에 행사가 있을때마다 가야금 병창을 공연해 주시고, 또 숙회 쟌슨 씨께서 영애 오엔 씨와 함께 트리니티 삼창단에 소속, 양로원을 포함하여 우리 지역사회의 여러단체를 위해 공연을 해 주시고 계십니다.

 Our President, Kuncha Johnson, (served as a president in 1987, 2010, 2011) organized Bible Study Group, Monthly Lamb, and teaches scriptures on every Monday in the Twin Cities area and some Wednesdays and some Saturdays in Wisconsin area and other Minnesota areas (except during the school vacation) to anyone who likes to learn bible scriptures.  She is truly an exemplary Korean American Citizen. We all admire the raised bar she sets for her life and her belief, for her faith in God is truly remarkable.  Under her leadership, our members were not limited to Minnesota and expanded to the state of Wisconsin; we built great unity in our community.

 우리 회장님, 군자 쟌슨씨께서는 (회장 역임, 1987, 2010, 2011) 성경공부단, 몬슬리 램브, (어린양) 을 조직, 트윈 시티 지역에는 매주 월요일, 그리고 또 수요일과 토요일에는 위스칸주를 비롯 다른 다른 미네소타 지역에도 (학교 방학기관 제외하고) 누구든지 성경구절을 배우고 싶어 하시는 분들께, 성경 공부를 가르치고 있습니다.  이분은 참으로 모범적인 한국인 미국 시민입니다.  저희들은 이분의 하나님에 대한 믿음, 이 믿음을 위해 높은 본보기를 세워 생활을 하시는 것은 정말 감동적으라 생각하며 우러러 봅니다.  이분의 지휘아래, 저희 회원은 미네소타 주에 한정하지 않고 위스칸슨 주에 까지 확장하여 우리 한인 사회에 좋은 화합을 이루는 계기가 되었습니다.

여성회 성금

Our organization’s operating expenses and financial aid for the community are 100% supported by our members, friends and families.  For this cause, our members raise funds regularly through various fundraising events, membership, board membership fees that we collect, and your generous contributions are playing important role in our community and we would like to remind this to you. 

저희 단체의 운영비와 지역 사회를 돕는데 필요한 재정은100% 저희 회원님들과, 가족들과, 그리고 우정어린 친구분들의 보조로 이어져 가고 있습니다.  이 것을 위해 저희 회원님들은 정기적인 여러가지 성금 모으기 운동을 하며, 저희들이 걷는 회비, 이사비 그리고 여러분의 정성어린 기부금은 저희 사회에 아주 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 다시 되새겨 드립니다.
